What is a Restraining Order?

Minnesota has two types of orders that can protect you from your abuser: orders for protection and harassment restraining orders. Coodin & Overson Law Offices can explain the differences to you and advise you on what is applicable to your situation.

  • Orders for protection: An OFP orders the abuser to stop the abuse. These can be temporary or permanent orders. Temporary orders for protection can be issued at a hearing without the abuser present; long-term orders for protection require a hearing that both parties attend.
  • Harassment restraining orders: A HRO orders the person to stop harassing or stalking you. These matters generally involve someone other than a spouse, significant other or family member.
