A Correlation Between Illness And Divorce
Till death do we part? Maybe not. A study out of the University of Michigan reports that couples who are diagnosed with serious illnesses may be more likely to face divorce than those who are healthy. The study notes the rate of divorce increases if the wife, not the husband, is diagnosed with a serious illness. Unfortunately, this can mean an individual suffering from an illness is also left struggling through a divorce.
More on the study
The study was conducted by the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research in collaboration with researchers from Purdue University. The researchers reviewed how the development of cancer, heart problems, lung disease and stroke impacted marital success. They found that 31 percent of the marriages studied that dealt with one of these issues ended in divorce.
Interestingly, although the scientists report that men were more likely to become ill they also found woman were “doubly vulnerable to marital dissolution in the face of illness.” Not only were they more likely to become widowed, they were also more likely to face a split if they became ill themselves.
Researchers point to societal expectations as a contributing factor to these outcomes. Those leading the study were careful to point out that in many cases it was the woman who initiated the divorce. This could point to a feeling of inadequate care and the need to find support elsewhere, perhaps with friends and family members.
What this study can mean for Minnesota divorces
The study reviewed 2,717 marriages throughout the United States. The findings can offer support for those who find themselves going through a similar situation here in Minnesota. In addition to finding comfort in the results of the study it can also help those that find themselves going through a separation to have a basic understanding of the role Minnesota state law plays in a divorce.
Minnesota’s divorce system is based on a no-fault principle, meaning either party can receive a divorce based on the belief that the marriage is over. The divorce proceeding generally involves four major issues, child custody, child support, spousal maintenance and the division of assets and debts. Though these are broad categories, the completion of each is structured for each unique situation.
If you are in the midst of divorce, it is wise to contact an experienced Minnesota divorce lawyer. This legal professional will be able to discuss your options and help to better ensure a divorce settlement is structured to meet your needs.
