What is a Restraining Order?
Minnesota has two types of orders that can protect you from your abuser: orders for protection and harassment restraining orders. Coodin & Overson Law Offices can explain the differences to you and advise you on what is applicable to your situation.
- Orders for protection: An OFP orders the abuser to stop the abuse. These can be temporary or permanent orders. Temporary orders for protection can be issued at a hearing without the abuser present; long-term orders for protection require a hearing that both parties attend.
- Harassment restraining orders: A HRO orders the person to stop harassing or stalking you. These matters generally involve someone other than a spouse, significant other or family member.
Our lawyers are adept at handling domestic violence issues that overlap with other family matters, such as divorce. If there is a history of domestic violence in your relationship, we urge you to seek help.
Are you the victim of spousal abuse, stalking or any type of harassment by a spouse or significant other? Are you attempting to stop an order for protection from keeping you from having contact with your children?
